Fire Escapes

The majority of external fire escapes in central London are constructed from mild steel with cast iron treads and landing plates.

Although extremely resistant to corrosion, the cast iron element can fail suddenly due to impact damage or the corrosion of the mild steel support frame. When this happens the tread and landing plate is extremely dangerous and needs to be repaired immediately. Occasionally the fire escape is in such a poor condition due to the corrosion of the mild steel elements that overhaul, or in the worst case replacement, is the only alternative.
